Day 4

Tuesday 18th January 2011

Work really starts today! Contractor arrives on site.

They start by taking the roof tiles off the rear dormer, exposing the existing roof timbers, and allowing them to start constructing the new structure.

Building Inspector from the Building Control department of our local authority, Chorley Borough Council arrives to perform their initial inspection.

Also, the scaffold is erected at the front of the house.

Materials arrived on-site delivered from, and by, Berrys.

Included roof tiles, ridge tiles, dry verges, fascias, cladding, lots of timber for the structure, etc., etc.

The Project - an overview

We (that's the Riley family: me, Andrea, Emily and Treacle the cat) moved to 55 Manor Road at the end of 2008. We knew then that the flat roof dormers would probably need lots of maintenance over the years, and that at some point we would have them converted to pitched roofs. That decision point came a lot sooner than we thought, when last summer (ha, summer) the rain just didn't let up, and even though we had re-sealed the flat roofs with a *lot* of sealant, it still came through.

Turned out we needed planning permission (for the front at least), and to conform to building regulations. We got a few quotes from local contractors, and finally decided to go with Leech & Bond

A new blog

This is the first post in a new blog that I have started just to document the building project on my house, 55 Manor Road.

The intention is to use this blog to capture the project in words and pictures, for no other reason than I can.
